It’s not easy being green, but someone’s got to do it. Season four of Vancouver Eco Fashion Week proved that it is possible for fashion to be eco-friendly. The three day event kicked off with a Value Village vintage fashion show, styled by Sarah La Greca, Deanna Palkowski, and Myriam Laroche. The trio styled looks that reflect Fall/Winter 2012 fashion trends, with just $500 worth of merchandise from Value Village.
Other fashion shows focused on swimwear, local designers, eco-friendly accessories, and repurposed everyday pieces. Each show was drastically different, but like conventional fashion, there were a few key trends:
- Plaids – Bright and bold, plaid was all over the EFW runway. The traditional cross-hatched pattern showed its unconventional side in splashes of gold, maroon, magenta, and scarlet.
- Pastels – A direct contrast to the flashy plaid, pastels made an appearance in vests, accessories, and outfit embellishments.
- Texture – Chunky knits, translucent lace, soft velvet, pleated upholstery fabrics, and transparent tights added eye-catching texture and detail.

Eco Fashion Week isn’t just about putting on a show; it aims to educate fashion-conscious consumers and challenges them to think about what they are purchasing. Seminars and industry panels educated attendees about sustainable fashion practices, eco-friendly dyes/processing, fashion waste, and sustainable business practices. After all, knowledge is power.
