Some of my favourite things to discover at a thrift store are leather goods: vintage leather gloves, lean leather boots, a pebbled leather bag, or a slimming leather skirt. Leather is one of those materials that ages gracefully, and the older it gets, the better it looks. A scratch here or a dent there tells a story, adds character, and makes your thrifted item undeniably comfortable.
I’m always on the hunt for vintage leather pieces, and on a recent trip to Value Village in Vancouver, I hit the leather jackpot. I found this Canadian made vintage leather and suede tiered skirt for just $25. It’s similar to one I was admiring in a store for over $400, and features classic vintage attention to detail like pleating, satin lining, and even a leather button closure.
I paired my leather skirt with a polka dot wool sweater, and accessorized with two more Value Village finds: a $12 woven clutch and a $4 vintage metal bracelet.
The metal bracelet is an affordable addition to my bracelet collection, and can be worn by itself or stacked with other pieces to add character. To emphasize the vintage vibe, I added a vintage-inspired cougar head bracelet and a chain-link watch.
The woven clutch still had the original store tags attached ($49), and features a wood clasp and a magnetic closure. I completed my outfit with a few favourite pieces from my closet, and stepped out in a stylish (and affordable) balance between vintage and contemporary.
