There’s an old saying that “clothes make the man.” In modern society, this could be changed to ”clothes make the person.” No matter how your phrase it, the message is the same: people are typically judged or perceived by others according to how they dress.
How you dress plays a very large role many career choices, but one of the best examples of this is poker players. They are famous for gathering all types of information on their opponents, and they frequently use how a player dresses to create a profile.
Lacey Jones, known as the Barbie of Poker, doesn’t look or dress like your typical poker player. Her outfits always have an edge to them, and she dresses for comfort, confidence, functionality, and of course, to emphasize her best features.
To take it a step further, some players will actually use their dress as a way to fool players. How others perceive you at the poker table can make a big difference between having a winning or losing session. If you appear conservative, you can run more bluffs successfully. When you are perceived as being loose, you can extract more money from players when you actually hold the winning hand.
While we wish that the world didn’t “judge a book by its cover”, the reality is that it does. Do as the poker player’s do, and use your wardrobe to your advantage.
