The Speedo has always been a slightly controversial item of men’s swimwear. Embraced by swarthy Brazilians and pro swimmers (and traditionally shunned by everyone else), there are many reasons why the skin-tight, all exposing style fell out of favour and into the realms of cringe worthy clichés some years ago.
But Summer 2012 brought tiny trunks back to the beaches, with designer names like Burberry, D&G, and Versace all sending short shorts down the catwalk.

Daniel Craig’s muscle bound haunches sauntering out of the ocean in skin-tight trunks definitely didn’t damage his sex appeal when he stripped off to play 007, but then he had the distinct advantage of being Daniel Craig. Giorgio Armani on the other hand, who at the fine age of 77 boasts otherwise impeccable fashion credentials, doesn’t cut quite the same figure when he pares down to his micro shorts on the beach. Finally, fashion and function collided at the Summer Olympics, where countless images of lean bodies were barely covered by the tiny trunks.
Only Summer 2013 fashion will tell whether or not this trend sticks around, but until then, gyms everywhere will be full of the hopeful beach bodies of 2013.
