The Vancouver Home + Design Show is taking place October 11-14, 2012, and I’ve got some exciting news to share. I’ll be appearing and participating in the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge, which challenges participants to makeover and upcycle items purchased from a Habitat For Humanity’s ReStore.
If you’re into DIY, design, crafting, and decorating on a budget, your local ReStore is an endless source of materials and inspiration. Everything in the store is received by donation and then sold to the public (furniture, lighting, paint, fixtures, raw materials, home accessories, and tools), with the profits supporting Habitat for Humanity. The Vancouver stores are located in Burnaby and Marpole, and their stock comes from public donations, building teardowns, movie sets, and company donations.
I visited the Burnaby ReStore and perused the store for two hours while I considered my options: dining room tables, windows, doors, chairs, kitchen cabinets, bricks, paint, and lighting. I eventually settled on the pile of items below, and once I organized a DIY plan of attack, I went to work. I can’t share my final masterpiece yet, but you can come see it at the Habitat for Humanity booth at the Home and Design Show, or on Van City Pretty in two weeks.

My favourite room is definitely my office at home- all my favourite possessions are there (plus a secret stash of junk food, hehe!)
My favourite room is the living room. It has furniture we hunted down after long and deliberate searches; pieces we refinished and/or reupholstered ourselves; old and new photos of loved ones; grandma’s pillows, in new covers; a fantastic rug I hand painted; and a silly paper monster mobile.

My favorite room in my apartment is my bedroom. I have chocolate coloured bedspread and curtains in the same pattern; two lovely dark brown jewellery chests that frame my delicious black and red antique chest of drawers. While it sounds crazy, it works so well together! I love wrapping up in my comforter, reading a novel, and taking naps in there. Also, it is ginormous!
